Managed IT: You Run Your Business, We Run the IT

What outsourced IT support really covers for small and mid-sized companies, why managed IT beats hiring piecemeal, and how ONYX supports the multi-vendor environments it builds.

Most small and mid-sized companies know the scene: a server hangs, mail stops, the internet drops — and everyone waits on the one «person who knows computers», usually an accountant or salesperson carrying IT as an extra burden. Managed IT exists to end that chaos: you run your business, and a professional team runs the IT. This article explains what outsourced IT support actually covers, why it makes more sense for a small or mid-sized business than hiring piecemeal, and how ONYX supports the environments it builds.

What managed IT actually covers

«IT support» is often understood as nothing more than «fix what's broken». In reality, managed IT is a structured service in which several ongoing functions work together. Here are its core components.

Monitoring

Servers, network gear, storage and services are watched continuously. A filling disk, a load spike or a stalled service is caught before a user ever files a complaint.

Updates and patching

Operating systems, firewall firmware and applications are kept current. Outdated, unpatched systems are one of the single biggest security risks a business carries.

Helpdesk and user support

Everyday staff requests — passwords, mail, printing, access rights — are handled from one point as tracked tickets. Nothing slips through the cracks.

Security

Firewall policies, antivirus, backups and access control are managed on an ongoing basis. Security is not a one-time install; it is a continuous process.

Vendor coordination

Warranty, licensing and technical support with suppliers like Cisco, Dell, Fortinet and Microsoft are handled on your behalf. You dial one number, not five.

Proactive maintenance

Scheduled checks, backup-restore testing and capacity planning head off problems before they happen. The goal is not to fight fires but to prevent them starting.

Why managed IT, not piecemeal hiring

A small or mid-sized business usually picks one of two paths: call a technician for each problem, or put a single IT employee on the payroll. Both have real weaknesses.

The on-call technician model

Something breaks, someone is called in, it's fixed, and everyone forgets about it until the next failure. This model has no monitoring, no prevention and no documentation — the same problem recurs again and again, costing time each time.

The single IT hire model

One person cannot fully cover network, servers, security, mail and user support at the same time. They get sick, take leave or resign — and the knowledge walks out with them. Managed IT replaces that with a team, documented processes and specialists who can cover for one another.

SLA — a promise, not a number

At the heart of managed IT sits the SLA (Service Level Agreement). An SLA sets out in writing which kinds of requests count as which priority, how they are logged, and in what order they are resolved. A critical outage outranks a routine password reset. The point is not advertising figures — it is a clear, transparent alignment between your business expectations and the service's commitments.

How ONYX supports multi-vendor environments

The hardest part of managed IT is keeping equipment from different manufacturers healthy at the same time. Because ONYX supports the environments it builds itself, this experience rests on real projects.

The environments we support differ sharply from one another. For the Judo Federation we built a Huawei-based Wi-Fi, switch and firewall infrastructure with HA/clustering and 120 access points — where continuity and high availability are decisive. At MobilGroup we run the domain, mail, server and site-to-site VPN across 5 branches and 120 users. For Aselsan Azerbaijan we built a data-center room with Dell PowerEdge servers, Active Directory and a Checkpoint firewall. At CCN Altyapı, roughly 20 offices are covered.

For one Baku company — a non-bank credit organization — network security was migrated from an ageing Cisco ASA to Fortinet FortiGate. This variety shows that managed IT means maintaining the mixed environment of a real business, not the kit of a single brand. On top of that, our own Onyx Firewall can be managed remotely, so policies, updates and monitoring run without a trip to your office — a natural fit for the managed IT model.

A full cycle from supply to support

ONYX's advantage is that we supply the equipment, build the infrastructure and then run it afterwards. So at the support stage there is no system to learn from scratch — the environment is already familiar to us. Our services and business solutions cover this full cycle.
